THE Royal Mail was trying to clear a backlog of around 15 million letters last night after a dispute over working practices in London.
The letters were trapped in sorting offices and sealed pillar boxes at the height of the disruption at the weekend. Workers in north-west London who walked out in protest at the introduction of a computer system have voted to end their action from midnight last night.
Work to reopen sealed boxes will begin today and services should be back to normal by the end of the week. Householders and businesses in London will receive at least one delivery today.A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The Royal Mail will be pulling out all the stops to get services back to normal as soon as possible."
Under the terms of the peace plan fresh talks will be held over the introduction of the computer which staff complained had increase their workload.
In return, workers who were suspended for taking strike action will not face disciplinary action.
